Carmel Police Department Expands to Meet Growing City Needs

July 26, 2024

Carmel, IN – The Carmel Police Department (CPD) has officially opened the doors to its expanded headquarters, a significant milestone reflecting the city’s rapid growth over the past few decades. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Thursday to celebrate the completion of the project, which nearly triples the size of the original building.

The expansion was necessitated by Carmel’s booming population, which has surged from approximately 25,000 residents in the 1990s to over 100,000 today. The new space will accommodate the nearly 150 CPD officers and also house the city court and clerk’s office, streamlining operations and improving efficiency.

“This expansion is more than just bricks and mortar,” said Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam. “It’s a symbol of our city’s progress and our investment in the future.”

Police Chief Drake Sterling emphasized the importance of the expanded facility for both officers and the community. “With that growth comes the need for growth within public safety,” Sterling said. “It’s an investment not only in public safety but also in the community.”

The new headquarters boasts a range of improvements, including dedicated offices for different divisions, a modern break room, and garage space for specialized vehicles. Perhaps most notably, the patrol and investigations divisions are now under the same roof, fostering better collaboration and efficiency.

Officer wellness is also a priority in the new space. The department has added a training room, an upgraded gym, and a physical therapy room. “We are here trying to focus on wellness,” Sterling said. “This space is really important for our people.”

The project, funded by $38 million in bonds, broke ground in August 2022 and has been eagerly anticipated by both the department and the community.

Envoy is proud to have worked closely with the city to create the project that will be a catalyst for public safety now and well into the future.
